If you have a pulse, two ears and an eye on CNN (yes, CNN), then you've already heard of twerking. But what is it? Why are people doing it? And how did Miley Cyrus twerking at the 2013 MTV VMAs fix the economy and bring peace to the Middle East?

Oh, it didn't? You'd have thought...

As Miley's performance continues to fuel a million, billion headlines, we understand that you will have questions. And we have answers to those questions in E!'s Beginner's Guide to Twerking:

Who isn't twerking? Students and strippers, grandparents and babies (yes, babies). But you are here because of Miley Cyrus. The former Hannah Montana star brought the twerking craze into living rooms around the world, first revealing her moves in a Facebook video, then in her "We Can't Stop" music video and most recently on stage at the Video Music Awards with Robin Thicke.

"I haven't really seen one bad comment about my twerk video," Miley said after her original twerking video debuted. "This is the first thing! All right, I can't sing, I can't act, I'm dumb, I'm a hillbilly, but I can twerk, so whatever!"

WHEN…DID PEOPLE START TWERKING?

Contrary to what you might believe, Miley Cyrus is not The Inventor of Twerking. Twerking has actually been around since the early ‘90s (though considering Miley was born in late 1992 and twerking was first mentioned in 1993, perhaps she is the Messiah of Twerking, born so that we might one day know this dance craze).

Twerking started in the New Orleans bounce music scene. In 1993, DJ Jubilee released "Do the Jubilee All," which featured the lyrics, "Twerk baby, twerk baby, twerk twerk twerk." In the next few years, NOLA rapper Cheeky Blakk dropped "Twerk Something!" and rap duo The Ying Yang Twins mainstreamed twerking with "Whistle While You Twerk."

Cut to 2013: Miley Cyrus makes a video mimicking the moves she had presumably seen in any number of YouTube videos and is legitimized when Jay Z raps, "Somewhere in America, Miley Cyrus is still twerking," in a track on his new album, Magna Carta...Holy Grail. She has not stopped twerking since.

A few possible reasons: Because it's a novelty now that Miley Cyrus did it and is guaranteed to get you a handful of YouTube views or a few laughs from your friends. Because it's a culturally relevant dance for you. Because you want to.

Or, as one Ph.D. researcher explained to ABC News, it is a great workout for your butt and thighs, as well the deep muscles of the hips, lower back muscles, and abs. The report explains that "It will shape and strengthen all those muscles as well as give them the stamina to do activities important to most people heavily involved in terming like say, picking up a screaming child off the floor."

One testimonial to the teaching powers of this video claims, "Although, I'm still a novice at the dance, the how-to video has unleashed my inner twerk dragon."

Note: As a general rule of thumb, the more booty you have, the better your twerk be. So don't skip a squat day at the gym, boys, and girls.

The twerking-induced suspension of 33 high school students in San Diego has brought the crazy, sexy, coolness of butt-jiggling to center stage. As the booty-shaking storm heats up, some are still scratching wondering: What is it?

The Wikipedia definition of twerking is, oddly, perfect. “Twerking is a dance move that involves a person shaking their hips and bottom in a bouncy up and down motion causing it to shake, wobble, and jiggle.”


If the combination of shake, wobble and jiggle in one sentence has sent you into a butt-thumping tizzy, you’re halfway to twerk-town.

Contrary to what the sudden popularity of twerking suggests, it’s not new. The dance was born in 1993 during DJ Jubilee’s reign as king of New Orleans' “bounce” music—a form of hip hop that revolves around call and repeat chanting. DJ Jubilee dropped the work in his song 1993 classic “Do the Jubilee All.” In it, he chanted: “twerk baby, twerk baby, twerk, twerk, twerk," and unknowingly gave birth to a new dance phenomenon.

In the song's music video, Jubilee featured boys and girls backing it up—just as he had described. Twerking had officially arrived. As more rappers caught onto the trend and rapped about it, the dance shifted to the mainstream. From strip clubs to house parties, good dancers and bad, the purpose and point of twerking has remained intact throughout its storied history: shake it like you mean it.

So who's twerking these days? And where are they twerking? The answer is everyone, and anywhere. Even Snow White’s getting involved. So should you.

Part of the reason it's taking off is its sheer simplicity. As proven by the high school students’ now-infamous video, twerking requires nothing more than a little bit of skill and a whole lot of ass. It’s endlessly entertaining, bizarrely addicting—and might even be the ticket to losing weight.

Luckily for us, there isn’t just one flavor of twerking. It can be smooth and steady, fast and rough, or just plain spicy. You can twerk in your bathroom, at Walgreens, even at church.

As with any dance, attitude is everything. Whether or not you’ve got enough junk in the trunk to make a real splash doesn’t necessarily matter, as long as you’ve got sass. Or, er, a big ass.

If you’re still confused, you’re not alone. Amanda Bynes thinks twerking is a word she made up, to use for anything. Thirty-five percent of some group thinks it involves tweeting at work. Australia may have successfully figured out how to reduce gun violence—but twerking, one of their most searched-for words on Google in 2012—is a nut they haven’t cracked.

But with the help of gifs and this professional twerker, it's safe to say you've got enough tools to convincingly fake it ‘til you make it. So before you throw in the towel and start YMCA’ing, give it a try. A few butt-thumps later and you’ll have the whole room singing “Sexy Can I.”
